So, the very old practice of meditation, this is a way to calm down the thought waves in the mind and it can develop the capability to find a tranquil and still middle even in the very difficult circumstances. By practicing meditation, one learns how to stop identifying with the thoughts and emotions, how gradually develop a consciousness of one more part of you. So, Yogis call this phenomenon the Inner Self. And you might have heard it referred to the Higher Self also called the Witness.
So, the Inner Self, it is the impartial observer of your living. If you imagine your existence as a film being projected onto a monitor, then you would be able to notice the Inner Self placed in the theater observing. The Inner Self is always in a position of sank into chit ananda, it is a Sanskrit word meaning being, awareness, bliss. Moreover, this is the normal state of an individual. The mind as well as emotions obscure this condition and make experiences of fright, anger, melancholy and distress.
Conscious breathing is one of simple exercise of meditation practice that anybody can do at any place and at any time. So, it is most excellent to begin practicing it in some quiet, clean room where you can be undisturbed for at least 30 minutes. So, sit down on the floor, you can also sit straight up in a chair but with your backbone straight, chin level, and feel your weight equally distributed on the seat bones. Then you should feel steady and relaxed. Take some deep breaths and release of your tensions. Let go your day, forget about it for this half an hour. This time is completely for you. Then focus on some point. Relax your look. Don’t gaze. It’s all right if your eyelids can close a little. Now turn your concentration to your breathing. Perceive it being in and out. Sense the air is in motion into your nostrils. Sense it makes your lungs full. You may detect there are some thoughts in your mind. That’s all right. If emotions arise, let them do it and release them. Return to the breath.
